Fall cleanup checklist for Vermont homeowners
The short answer
In Chittenden County, the best time for a fall cleanup is after most of the leaves have dropped, usually late October into November, and before the first snow that sticks around. Clear leaves off the lawn, clean the gutters, give the lawn a final mow, cut back spent garden beds, and put away anything the snow could damage.
Why fall cleanup matters more in Vermont
Snow can cover a Vermont lawn for months, so whatever is on the grass in November usually stays there until April. A thick layer of wet leaves blocks light and holds moisture against the grass all winter. That can smother the lawn and encourage snow mold, a fungal disease that shows up in spring as matted, grayish or pinkish patches as the snow melts.
A good cleanup now means less repair work, and a faster green-up, next spring.

The fall cleanup checklist
- Remove leaves from the lawn, beds, and hard surfaces. A light scattering of leaves can be mulched into the lawn with a mower. Thick layers should be raked or blown up and hauled away.
- Clean the gutters and downspouts. Do it after the leaves are down and before freezing weather. Clogged gutters are a common contributor to ice dams. How gutter cleaning helps prevent ice dams.
- Give the lawn a final mow. Keep mowing as long as the grass is growing. For the last cut, go a little shorter than your summer height, without scalping it, so the grass is less likely to mat down under the snow.
- Cut back and clean out garden beds. Pull spent annuals and remove diseased foliage. Many perennials can be cut back now, though leaving some stems and seed heads helps pollinators and birds over winter.
- Clear brush and fallen branches. Overgrown corners and storm debris are far easier to deal with before they're buried in snow.
- Mark driveway and walkway edges. Stakes along the edges help whoever plows or shovels avoid tearing up the lawn and garden beds.
- Disconnect hoses and drain outdoor faucets. Water left in a hose or spigot can freeze and crack pipes.
- Note thin or bare spots for next year. Late October is too late to seed in Vermont, but late summer is ideal. When to aerate and overseed in Vermont.
When to book a fall cleanup
Aim for the window after most leaves have fallen and before lasting snow, which in Chittenden County is typically late October through November. Cleanup crews fill up quickly once the leaves drop, so booking early helps. Many homeowners pair a fall cleanup with gutter cleaning, since both are best done at the same time.
Waiting too long has a cost: an early snow can press leaves into the lawn and leave you with a bigger job in spring.
