Mulch or rock?

Mulch breaks down over time and feeds the soil, which makes it the better pick for planting beds, shrubs, and trees. It usually needs a top-up every year or two to keep its color and depth.

Rock and stone don't break down, so they're the low-maintenance choice for side yards, under decks, along foundations, and anywhere you'd rather not re-mulch.

Common questions

When is the best time to mulch in Vermont?

Spring, once beds have been cleaned up and the soil has warmed, usually May into June in Chittenden County. Fall is also a good time to refresh beds before winter.

How deep should mulch be?

About 2 to 3 inches is the usual target. Deeper than that can hold too much moisture, and mulch should be pulled back from tree trunks and plant stems rather than piled against them.

How often does mulch need to be replaced?

Most beds look best with a fresh top layer every year or two, depending on how much sun they get and how fast the mulch fades and breaks down.

Can you convert my mulch beds to rock?

Yes. We do mulch-to-rock and rock-to-mulch conversions, including removing the old material and prepping the bed.

How much does mulching or rock work cost?

It depends on the size of the beds, the material, and the prep work involved. Request a free quote and we'll give you an honest price with no obligation.
